Stone Problems

Dull rings and marks on your marble? That’s usually etching — and it’s refinishable.

Etching is not a stain sitting on top of the stone; it’s a change to the surface itself. The good news is that the surface is exactly what we refinish.

What you’re seeing

Dull spots and rings that won’t wipe away.

Pale, dull marks, rings or water spots — often where a glass, bottle or dish sat, or near the sink.

They look like the shine has been erased in that spot, and no amount of cleaning brings it back.

The rest of the surface may still be glossy, which makes the etched areas stand out.

What it usually is

A chemical reaction, not dirt.

Marble, limestone and travertine are calcium-based, and everyday acids react with them — citrus, wine, coffee, tomato, and many general-purpose or “natural” cleaners.

The acid dissolves a microscopic layer of the polished surface, leaving a dull etch. It is extremely common on kitchen counters and bar tops.

Because it’s the surface that has changed, it is refinishable — unlike a deep stain, which sits inside the stone.

What can be done

Honing and polishing the surface back.

Light etching can often be polished out. Deeper or widespread etching is honed to a uniform surface and then re-polished to match the finish you want.

We’ll also point out simple prevention — stone-safe cleaners, coasters and prompt wipe-ups — so it doesn’t come back as quickly. We restore existing stone; we do not install replacement floors.
